Machu Picchu (from Quechua old mountain) is the contemporary name the ancient stone Inca village.

MACHU PICCHU TOWN (Aguas Calientes town)
Aguas Calientes is the name of Machu Picchu Town, referring to the medicinal hot springs of the area.
This town works as operating base for the travelers visiting Machu Picchu and who want to rest after walking along the Inca Citadel, the Mandor Gardens, Putucusi, Huaynapicchu and Machu Picchu Mountains. It is also the arrival point for travelers who have chosen to access Machu Picchu by one of the treks offered by tour operators as the Traditional Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek and Inca Jungle Trek.In Machu Picchu Town the people can enjoy a relaxing dip in the Hot Springs and/or to perform other activities offered by this wonderful place full of magic and mystery.
Aguas Calientes town is a compendium of hotels, hostals, hostels, restaurants, bars and other touristic services. One of the attractions of this town are the markets, especially the organic fruit and vegetable ones where the traveler will be able to find the variety of local products and delicious flavors.
Before going to Machu Picchu it is recommended to exchange currency in Cusco city for its equivalent: Nuevo Sol (local currency), for there are businesses in Machu Picchu that only accept Nuevos Soles and in the case of accepting dollars, they devalue the currency. Regarding other currencies, t is less likely to get exchange in Aguas Calientes and in the case of finding places that accept them, they are also devaluated as the dollar or euros. We recommend you take this into account to avoid misunderstandings.
In the archaeological area there are small shops where you can buy small groceries at a cost of 15 dollars (approximately). These snacks, are usually, not nutritious, so we recommend buying fruit, vegetables or other organic snacks to make a picnic at Machu Picchu while enjoying the magnificent scenery and natural surroundings.
It is important not to litter as this will lead to a penalty. The security staff of Machu Picchu, checks all the time that the people respect and care for the citadel.
